Preventive Maintenance
Pre-Purchase Inspections
Buying a used truck or diesel? An hour with us before you sign can save you thousands. We tell you what you're really buying.
Signs you may need pre-purchase inspection
An hour on our lift before you sign can save you thousands after. A used vehicle can look clean in a parking lot and still be hiding a tired transmission, a cracked-up emissions system, or a leak the seller wiped down that morning. We tell you what you're really buying.
What we check
We go over the engine and transmission, scan for stored and pending codes the dash isn't showing you, and inspect brakes, suspension, steering, and the underside for leaks and rust. You get a straight rundown of what's solid, what'll need attention soon, and what it's likely to cost. That's real leverage at the negotiating table.
Used diesels get a closer look
Diesel pickups are where a bad buy really hurts, because the repairs are big. On a Duramax we look hard at injectors, the CP4 fuel pump, and any past head-gasket history. On a Cummins we check the lift pump, injectors, and the dreaded death-wobble front end. On a Power Stroke it depends on the year, but EGR coolers, oil coolers, and turbos are the usual trouble spots. We know where these trucks break.
Honest, not a deal-killer
Our job isn't to talk you out of the truck. It's to make sure you go in with eyes open. Plenty of trucks we inspect are worth buying, and we'll say so. For the ones that aren't, you'll be glad you spent the inspection money instead of the repair money.
Pre-Purchase Inspection — common questions
What does a pre-purchase inspection cover?
Engine, transmission, driveline, brakes, suspension, steering, and a scan for stored and pending codes, plus a leak and fluid check. On diesels we add the fuel system, turbo, and emissions components. You get an honest summary of the condition and likely repair costs.
Should I really inspect a used diesel before buying?
Absolutely. Diesel repairs are expensive, and trucks like the Duramax, Cummins, and Power Stroke each have known weak points. Knowing whether the previous owner kept up on them is the difference between a great buy and a money pit.
Can you do the inspection if the truck isn't here in Athens?
The vehicle needs to come to our shop on Danielsville Road so we can get it on the lift and scan it properly. If it's not driveable, our towing partner Athena Towing can bring it in. Call or text (912) 601-7083 to set it up.
