Diesel Transmission Service & Upgrades

Towing heat is the number-one killer of diesel transmissions. We service, repair, and upgrade them — including BD Diesel components — to take the abuse.

Signs you may need diesel transmissions

Slipping, flaring, or delayed engagement
Harsh, banging, or erratic shifts
Shudder when locking the torque converter
Overheating while towing or climbing grades
Burnt-smelling, dark, or low fluid

Towing heat is the number-one killer of diesel transmissions. Pulling a trailer up a grade in the North Georgia heat cooks the fluid, and burnt fluid stops protecting the clutches and the converter. We service, repair, and upgrade these transmissions to take the abuse you actually put them through, instead of just patching them until the next breakdown.

Heat is the enemy, fluid is the defense

Fresh fluid and a clean filter do more for a hard-working diesel transmission than almost anything else. If you tow with an Allison behind a Duramax, a 68RFE behind a Cummins, or a TorqShift behind a Power Stroke, regular service is cheap compared to a rebuild. We check fluid condition, cooler flow, and operating temps, and we'll tell you straight if you're running hotter than you should be.

Slipping, harsh shifts, and shudder

A slip, a bang, or a converter shudder is the transmission telling you something's wearing out. We diagnose whether it's the fluid, the valve body, the converter, or internal wear, then fix the real issue instead of throwing a fluid change at a mechanical problem and calling it good.

Build a tow rig that survives

If you tow heavy, a stock transmission is often the weak link in the truck. As an authorized BD Diesel Performance dealer, we install upgraded torque converters and components built to handle the heat and torque of a loaded diesel. Add an auxiliary cooler and a proper service schedule, and that's the difference between a transmission that survives the work and one that leaves you stranded with a loaded trailer behind you.

Diesel Transmissions — common questions

How often should I service my transmission if I tow?

More often than the guy who doesn't tow. Towing heat breaks fluid down faster, so a hard-working tow rig benefits from more frequent service. Bring it in and we'll check the fluid and recommend an interval that fits how you use it.

My transmission shudders when it locks up. Is that bad?

It's worth checking now. Shudder is often the torque-converter clutch or contaminated fluid. Caught early it can sometimes be a fluid service. Ignored, it can turn into a converter or a full rebuild.

Are BD Diesel upgrades worth it for towing?

If you tow heavy and want it to last, yes. Upgraded converters and components handle heat and torque a stock unit struggles with. We're an authorized BD Diesel dealer and can build your transmission for the loads you actually pull.
